10.10.07 | Time For A Change So it's been quite a while since I've had a chance to write and say hello to you all. Things have been extremely busy in my neck of the woods. The new album is selling extremely well and the download sales are unbelievable (I have to be honest, I never really thought the whole MP3/iPod thing was going to catch on – I was wrong!).
I've spent most of my time promoting the album abroad and working to re-establish my international presence. It has definitely paid off – the album is doing really well in Europe and Asia. It's also been a lot of work.
I named the disc "In the Meantime" because I felt like this album was my way to put out tracks that I'm really proud of while buying myself the time I need to take my music in a different direction. This album felt like a mid-point for me – melodically, lyrically, and emotionally, "In The Meantime" has the focus and organization that I've struggled to find in some of my previous albums. I think that the release of this album has allowed me to close a chapter or two in my musical career. To be honest, I resent some of the cleanliness that this album exudes. Recording it was a bit of a creative nightmare – some of the songs were recorded countless different times in order to get the exact sound I wanted. What got lost in the mix was the spontaneity that makes an album sound rugged and natural. I feel that the songs are some of the best I've ever written, but they're good in a 'this-sounds-like-a-single' kind of way. None of the songs support other songs on the album. Instead, I think they all fight to be heard. Since I recorded those songs, I've become a lot more comfortable with my singing and songwriting – that comfort shows in the songs I'm working on now.
I'm leading up to something here. Since I was eleven years old, I've been releasing music as "Twilight's Moon," sometimes with other musicians and sometimes by myself. After more than a decade, I think that the name "Twilight's Moon" and my previous works have started to define who I am and who I'm expected to be. I've never wanted to be an artist who has to play by the rules – I don't think that my music or my 'self' fit into any specific category. I am who I am.
Having said that, I think it's time to move past the Twilight's Moon name for the time being. I don't need to hide in the shadows of an established career. These new songs I'm working on are different from anything I've ever done – they're still melodic and pleasing, but they're more spontaneous and alive. They stand on their own, but in a way that supports the creative whole and delivers a message. For the first time in a long time, I feel comfortable breaking some new musical ground and trying to bring something new to the table. For that reason, I feel that this is the start of a second phase (and the second decade) of my career. I think the time is right for me to present my work as me. As of now, my plan is to release my next album as "Brian Larsen," not Twilight's Moon. It may seem like a small step, but it's a giant leap in breaking with the past. The new album is tentatively scheduled for release on May 6, 2008. I'm about a quarter of the way done recording.
I hope you all are doing well. Enjoy the fall and the beautiful colors it brings.
With love,
-Brian Larsen

12.21.06 | A Message from Brian -- Looking Back on 2006 2006 was an unforgettable year for all of us -- it's certainly been a mixture of highs and lows. The phenomenal success of the three singles I released over the course of the year was overshadowed by the death of my longtime manager and business partner, Debra Ritz Mason. Her passing put the importance of family and friends into perspective for me...
I've spent the majority of the year in an introspective and pensive state ~ as I've gotten older and spent more and more time taking in the realities of this world that so many suffer through -- poverty, hunger, and disease -- I've felt very overwhelmed, almost as if I'm on a sensory overload. There is so much going on outside of this narrow margin of reality that a select few of us experience that the shell-shock of the life that others live can be mind-boggling. It makes you start to feel very political and disenfranchised with the world.
At any rate, I've felt very inspired over the last several months and I've written a wealth of material -- I will be releasing multiple different projects over the next year... expect to see the long awaited "Last of the Romantics" as well as some exclusive EPs and many, many surprises.
In honor of the ten-year anniversary of the release of "Pi", my debut album, the ten-year anniversary of Protocol Records, I am declaring 2007 to be the year of Twilight's Moon. It's been an incredible journey ~ I hope you'll join me for another decade and beyond.
Take care of yourselves ~ have a great holiday ~ I love you all!
